How Mindset Shifts Made It Possible to Travel the World

Backpacking as a mindset to travel shift

When we decided to pick up backpacks and leave everything behind to travel the world, a lot came up. Although it didn’t stop us, the truth is significant mindset shifts to travel had to take place to make this adventure happen.

Between societal norms dictating what a couple in their late 20s should be doing and the pressure from our environment—considering the lifestyle and successful careers we were building as a barber and hairstylist—along with a new life coaching business, Greaterful You, our decision to leave everything behind didn’t make sense to many. But it did to us.

Following through this adventure required letting go of limiting beliefs, opinions, and doubts. As well as acquiring new beliefs—ones that we would prove right along the way.

Note: After traveling full-time for over two years, we’ve noticed one major thing that almost all long-term travelers have in common—and surprisingly, it’s not financial wealth. It’s a mindset.

The Moment We Knew We Had to Travel the World

Travel in Milos, Greece

I (Thais) first thought about this journey in late 2018 when a friend had taken a similar leap and I was ecstatic by his decision. I caught myself saying “I wish we could do that too” only to realize that we could. From that moment on, I became obsessed with the lifestyle of full time travelers and knew it was a journey I wanted us to embark on soon.

But COVID happened, and everything was delayed. Life continued, and so did our pursuit of this dream. Kelvyn was on board as usual, but because the idea didn’t originate from him, he couldn’t fully see the vision I saw— nonetheless, he trusted it either way.

One of the most important things we had to understand was that the one thing standing between the life we were living and the lifestyle change we wanted was our mindset and our ability to believe that we could make it possible.

Note: Quitting our jobs to travel the world wasn’t a choice we made overnight. It required time, strategic planning, and an immense amount of trust and surrender.

Overcoming Fear and Doubt

Milos, Greece

We kept this new idea to ourselves for a long time. We didn’t want the fears and beliefs of others to influence our decision. Once we were ready to share, we did— with a few people at a time.

Some of the most common questions we were asked included:

  • Aren’t you afraid of quitting your careers when you’re at the peak of growth opportunities?
  • Aren’t you afraid you won’t find a job in the future and will have to start over?
  • What if you run out of money and have to return with nothing?
  • Aren’t you afraid of what people will say or think if you don’t make it?
  • Won’t you feel guilty leaving everything and everyone behind?
  • What if you get sick or get into an accident in a foreign country?
  • Aren’t you a bit too old to start backpacking? Shouldn’t you be settling and having kids soon?
  • How do you know this will work if you don’t personally know anyone else who has done it?
Dorm room a mindset shift we had to make to travel full time

We never thought we would sleep in dorms—one of the many mindset shifts that changed along our journey!

Note: These were all valid concerns. But the reason we didn’t hesitate was that we weren’t making this decision out of fear. We were leading with certainty instead.

We focused on all the ways we knew this journey would benefit us—and in hindsight, we had no idea just how transformative it would actually be.
