Welcoming Our Little Traveler: A Home birth Story

In late February 2026, our lives changed in the most beautiful way. We welcomed our little traveler— a baby girl into the world, right from the comfort of our home.

Having a home birth was something we dreamed of years prior to becoming pregnant. However, like any “out of the ordinary idea,” we didn’t know if what we envisioned would be a possibility.

Here’s a little glimpse into that experience.

Preparing for This Decision

I (Thais) researched what having a baby at home would require years prior to trying to get pregnant, while still traveling full-time (the type A in me still lives on). Who would we have to hire? How much would it cost? What physical and mental preparation would we have to have? What safety standards would it have to meet for us to be comfortable with the decision? What would we do if there was an emergency? And would we know when to transfer if necessary?

The list went on.

As I searched for the answers, I became more confident that it was exactly what I was meant to do.

To be honest, the hardest part of preparation (not birth) was making sure that other people’s fears and concerns didn’t become our own. It required being very confident in the decision and trusting my intuition, especially through all of the “why’s”, “aren’t you scared”, or “what if there is an emergency” questions we received along the way.

Something we also worked through when we initially shared that we were quitting our jobs to travel the world a few years prior. To be fair, these decisions were uncommon and viewed as “risky”, so we expected those around us to be rightfully concerned.

The Experience & Reflection

On February 2026, years after becoming curious about having a home birth and 9 months of being pregnant (41 weeks and 2 days to be exact), with the help of our incredible midwives, loving family, and most importantly an extremely supportive and hands-on husband— I was able to make that dream a reality, in a space that felt safe, calm, and entirely our own.

Tip: Visual affirmations work as a grounding tool and reminder of your initial beliefs and intentions.

Now, my birthing experience wasn’t perfect, nor what I fully envisioned—though part of mentally preparing for something like this was accepting and embracing that anything could happen.

It was painful, unpredictable, and long (thank you to all the mamas for warning me ahead of time)—yet the most beautiful experience we’ve encountered.

Though I was able to “peacefully” labor in the tub a few times, baby girl had other plans for the delivery and arrived hours (a lot of hours) later on our bed.

The experience taught me so much about myself, as well as the importance of having the right people by your side, especially in moments where you begin to doubt yourself (which I did).

Fun Fact: We did not know the sex of our baby until she was born!

We are so grateful for this opportunity, and share our personal story because hearing others like it gave us the confidence to follow through. We hope it inspires others who have this same desire in their hearts.

In a life where we’ve experienced many places around the world, having a home birth was by far the most grounding and transformative experience of all. One we will for sure remember for the rest of our lives.
