Islands have a special place in our hearts because they remind us to slow down. Whether it’s the endless coconuts, incredible tropical fruits, no-shoes policies, snorkel spots, or that small community feel—there’s something about island life that makes us feel so grounded. From the moment we arrive to the moment we leave, the laid-back energy always has us contemplating whether or not we should make one of them our home.

Travel Tips for Island Hopping Around the World

Boat Travel: What to Expect

Ferries and boat rides are often the only way to access islands, unless they are developed and have airports.

Be sure to do the following:

  • Check if ferries and boats require pre-booking or if tickets can be purchased directly at the office at the time of your trip.
  • Prepare for delays, cancellations, or weather-related interruptions.
  • Bring motion sickness pills or natural remedies like essential oils (specially during swell seasons)

Tip: We use Airalo to stay connected instantly—no store visits or paperwork.

Tides, Moon Phases & Seasons Matter

We never understood just how much tides, moon phases, and seasons could impact an island until we experienced it over and over again in different parts of the world.

The look and feel of the beach can change drastically depending on the tides, so much so that the paradise destination you saw online might look like a dried-up scam when you arrive. We’ve revisited the same island and seen the beach disappear entirely or be twice as wide, all depending on the time and day!

The same beach as the image above at a different time of day.

This isn’t to scare you, but to help you avoid (or at least minimize the chances of) finding yourself in the same situation.

Consider the following:

  • Avoid traveling during monsoon or swell season.
  • Use apps like Tide Charts, or simply ask locals to help you plan your beach time better.

What You Should Know Before You Go to Any Island

Sides of the Island Vary

Where you stay on the island really matters—especially if you’re looking for a specific view or vibe during your stay. One side may be calm and perfect for swimming, while the other might be full of waves or seaweed depending on the season.

Consider the following:

  • Ask where the sunset and sunrise views are best—this can also help you pick accommodations if having a view is important to you.
  • Determine which is the more developed or touristic side, as one can be louder and pricier, while the other more peaceful and affordable.

Peak Season vs Shoulder Season

The time of year you choose to visit an island plays a big role in your overall experience—it affects availability, activity options, prices, and the ocean visibility.

Note: We use Surfshark to keep our info safe while booking tours, transferring money, or streaming.

Consider the following:

  • Expect higher prices, crowded beaches, and limited accommodation during peak season.
  • Shoulder season often offers the best mix of weather and affordability, but can be accompanied by occasional rain.
  • Off-season typically means fewer crowds and better deals, but many tours and restaurants may be closed, and the weather can be more unpredictable.

Tip: Check for upcoming local holidays and festivals so you can plan accordingly.

Things People Don’t Tell You About Island Travel

Expect Power Outages

  • Especially in remote or less developed islands, power outages can happen frequently.
  • Some places turn off power during the day to conserve energy, be sure to check if this is common where you are headed.

Consider Mosquito Season

  • Standing water and humid climates lead to a lot of mosquitoes and bites if you are prone to them.
  • Pack repellent, allergy medicine, long sleeves for evenings, and select a room with mosquito nets if you are staying somewhere without AC.

Essentials Are Often More Expensive

  • Items such as sunscreen, tampons, basic medicine, and bug spray can cost 2–3x more.
  • Pack a mini essentials kit before to be safe.

Always Carry Cash

  • Not all islands have reliable access to ATMs and card machines can go down during power outages.
  • Bring enough local currency for transportation, tips, meals, and emergencies.

Note: Most developed islands now offer credit card payments as an option. However, we recommend taking a bit of cash for small vendors who may not offer that as an option.
